A massive, third explosion was heard in the centre of Kabul city late Monday night, hours after back-to-back explosions left at least 30 persons dead and over 90 wounded.

Security sources said the blast was caused by a vehicle packed with explosives that was detonated in the city’s Shahr-e-Naw area, Khaama Press reported.

The Ministry of Interior said early Tuesday that the target of Monday night’s bombing in Kabul city appears to have been a charity by the name of CARE (Pamlarana), Tolo news reported.

Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said at least one civilian was killed and one other wounded. However, there were no details on how many people are inside the Pamlarana building.

He said the organisation was targeted in a bombing and attackers then entered the building in Shar-e-Naw.

Sporadic gun firing and explosions were also heard early Tuesday as security forces exchanged fire with gunmen who seized a building in central Kabul, a security source said.

‘One terrorist detonated a car bomb at a building in Shar-e-Naw locality late Monday night. Several gunmen took position inside the stricken building… Afghan Special Operation Forces were clearing the area,’ the source told Xinhua news agency.

According to the preliminary reports the target of the explosion was a guesthouse but there were no immediate reports of casualties.

Earlier on Monday, twin explosions rocked the city close to the Ministry of Defence compound, leaving at least 30 people dead, with the majority of the victims said to be security personnel.

Unfounded reports of shots fired at New York’s main airport triggered scenes of panic, massive evacuations and huge delays late Sunday.

There was no immediate confirmation of injuries or arrests, but Port Authority police evacuated at least two terminals at John F. Kennedy International Airport out of precaution.

Spokesman Joe Pentangelo said Port Authority police had received an
ultimately “unfounded” call of shots fired.

A ground stop was in place until 12:30 am (0430 GMT) for “security” reasons, the Federal Aviation Administration said.

Around that time, New York Police Department Special Operations Division Chief Harry Wedin said all terminals had been “searched & cleared.”

“All affected terminals will resume operations shortly. No shots were fired,” he added on Twitter.

The Port Authority also said a preliminary investigation found no shots were fired at JFK and there were no injuries.

“At this time, no gun shells or other evidence of shots fired has been found,” a statement added.

“The terminal was evacuated out of an abundance of caution… There is substantial PAPD and NYPD presence at JFK and LGA. Investigation continues.”

Wedin said earlier that Port Authority, NYPD and Emergency Service Unit police were clearing Terminal 1 and Terminal 8.

But a pilot on a plane awaiting departure at Terminal 2 said police were sweeping that terminal after it was evacuated.

At Terminal 1, an AFP journalist was among passengers stranded on a plane on the tarmac for an hour and a half.

After deplaning, hundreds of people queuing to pass through immigration checkpoints were stuck in the area for more than two hours under heavy police presence.

Panic spread quickly through the crowd as police ordered people to lie on the ground, then evacuated them outside on the tarmac before making them pass through a corridor.

“Get down on the ground!” police officers yelled. “Move, move move!”

Police prohibited travelers from making phone calls or taking photographs. One man was arrested for trying to capture images of the chaotic scenes.

When the travelers returned to the immigration area, there was renewed panic as armed police ran back and forth. Some travelers were ordered to hide in immigration booths. Police gave travelers no explanation for the security incident.

One woman sobbed loudly because she lost her nine-year-old child in the commotion.

Myanmar State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi will pay an official visit to China from August 17 to 21 at the invitation of Chinese Premier Li Keqiang, Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lu Kang announced Monday.

Aung San Suu Kyi is the first Myanmar leader to visit China since the Southeast Asian nation’s new government was formed late March.

“It holds great significance to the comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership between both countries in the new phase,” Lu said.

Chinese leaders will meet with her and exchange views on bilateral
relations and issues of mutual interest. Apart from Beijing, Aung San Suu Kyi will visit other Chinese cities, according to Lu.

China believes this visit will increase the strategic communication and practical cooperation between China and Myanmar as well as friendly relations among their peoples, Lu said.

“It will promote our relationship to achieve new development and bring more benefit to the peoples,” the spokesperson said.

The European Parliament’s first debate on the UK’s vote to leave has been marked by bitter exchanges.

A central figure in the Leave campaign, UK Independence Party (UKIP) leader Nigel Farage, was booed, called a liar and accused of using “Nazi propaganda”.

Mr Farage shot back that the EU itself was “in denial”.

UK Prime Minister David Cameron is meeting leaders of the other 27 EU states for the first time since Thursday’s referendum.

“I’ll be explaining that Britain will be leaving the European Union but I want that process to be as constructive as possible,” he told reporters before the summit’s working dinner in Brussels.

An EU official close to the talks told BBC News the mood was “very, very serious” and a question mark hung over the UK’s next presidency of the EU, due to begin in the second half of next year.

“The leaders are very interested in hearing the UK’s timeline but everyone knows Cameron won’t trigger Article 50 [the first formal step in the withdrawal procedure],” the source added.

The announcement of Mr Cameron’s replacement as leader of the Conservative Party, and thus prime minister, is not due now until 9 September, with 12:00 BST Thursday as the deadline for nominations.

European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker warned against delay in starting the exit process: “I don’t think we should see any shadow-boxing or any cat-and-mouse games. It is clear what the British people want and we should act accordingly.”
