Today is the birthday of Mustafizur Rahman. He is specialized as a left-arm fast bowler.

He has taken the most wickets (13) in a debut One Day International series. He is the first player to win the ‘Man of the Match’ award on both Test as well as ODI debuts.

According to Wikipedia, Rahman made his international cricket debut against Pakistan in the Twenty20 format in April 2015. Later that year, he played his first One Day International and Test matches against India and South Africa, respectively.

Before his international career, Rahman played in the 2014 Under-19 Cricket World Cup. He also represented Dhaka Dynamites in the 2015 Bangladesh Premier League and representing Sunrisers Hyderabad in 2016 Indian Premier League, taking the award of Emerging Player for his debut season.

Rahman grew up in the small town of Shatkhira in Khulna Division, Bangladesh. He is the youngest of Abul Qasem Gazi and Mahmuda Khatun’s six children. His father is an enthusiastic fan of cricket.

Rahman’s interest in cricket rose when he started practicing the game 40 kilometers away from home every morning, with his brother Mokhlesur Rahman. This affected his education as he occasionally skipped study to play cricket.

Prior to discovering his bowling talents, Rahman played as a batsman with a tennis ball. According to him, he took inspiration from Pakistani pacer Mohammad Amir, who is his idol.
Youth career
In 2012, Rahman came to the capital Dhaka to try out for a fast-bowlers camp. Prior to that, scouters first encountered him in an Under-17 tournament in his hometown. He was admitted to the Bangladesh Cricket Board`s foundation of fast bowling. Soon he was selected to the Bangladesh Under-19 side for the 2014 Under-19 Cricket World Cup in UAE, where he took a total of eight wickets.

Rahman started both his First-class cricket and List-A cricket from 2014, representing Khulna Division and Abahani Limited, respectively. He was picked for Bangladesh A’s tour of West Indies.

Domestic career
Indian Premier League
In the Indian Premier League auction of the 2016 season, Rahman was drafted by Sunrisers Hyderabad.[8] He took 17 wickets in 16 matches in that tournament where Sunrisers Hyderabad won the title. He was named as ‘Emerging Player of the Tournament’, being the first overseas player to receive this award.

Bangladesh Premier League
Rahman’s professional Twenty20 career outside international cricket was the Bangladesh Premier League, where he played for Dhaka Dynamites in its 2015 season. He took 14 wickets in 10 matches in that tournament.

NatWest T20 Blast
In March 2016, English side Sussex announced that they had signed Rahman as their second overseas player for the T20 Blast competition. He picked up 4 wickets while giving away only 23 runs in his debut match against Essex County Cricket Club. He bowled a brilliant 4 overs with 15 dot balls out of 24 balls in the match which helped Sussex County Cricket Club to win by 24 runs.

Pakistan Super League
Mustafizur was selected by Lahore Qalandars in the Pakistan Super League. The BCB was reluctant to let him play there. However, the issue was resolved when Rahman got a shoulder injury in early 2016, thus preventing him from playing in the PSL.

Ace all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has said that he wants Bangladesh to win both the ODI and Test series against England this October.

The left-armer returned to the country yesterday morning after winning the Caribbean Premier League with the Jamaica Tallawahs.

Speaking to reporters at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport, he said: “I definitely think that we can win the one-day series. We also have the ability to win in Test cricket. Basically, I want to win both the Test and the one-day series and I know that the entire team wants the same.”

In 13 CPL matches, Shakib scored a total of 160 runs at an average of 22.85. With the ball he scalped 12 wickets at a miserly economy rate of 6.94. He said that he was happy with the way he played in the West Indies.

“I think I performed well. I didn’t get a chance to bat where I normally bat in T20s. But I performed whenever the team needed me and that’s why I am happy,” he said.

Following the CPL Shakib overtook Sunil Narine in the wickets tally and with 242 wickets has the highest number of wickets in T20s amongst spinners. He ranks seventh overall.

The left-armer though played down the achievement. “The others are great bowlers as well. I guess I was a little lucky as well. But yes I will definitely try to hold on to this form for a long time.”

It is still uncertain whether Shakib will join the ongoing national camp at Mirpur. “Let’s see. I might spend some time outside cricket and then get back in full rhythm. I will have to talk and discuss the matter with our coach,” he said.

Michael Phelps won his 22nd career gold medal in spectacular fashion Thursday, demolishing his rivals in the 200m individual medley.

Rio is the fourth straight Olympics Phelps has taken gold in the event, and he did so by a wide margin, far outpacing the rest of the field. Silver medalist Kosuke Hagino of Japan trailed Phelps by nearly a body-length. China’s Wang Shun took bronze. Lochte, Phelps’ longtime friend and rival, finished a disappointing fifth.

The win gave Phelps his 13th individual gold medal–an Olympic record that burnishes his title as the world’s most decorated Olympian.

Phelps wasn’t the lone American to win gold Thursday. Ryan Murphy won his second gold of these Olympics, in the 200-m backstroke: Americans have now won the event in six straight Olympics. He set the Olympic record in the 100-m backstroke on Monday.

For Team USA, the night was tinged with disappointment. Missy Franklin failed to advance to the 200-m backstroke final after setting a world record in event at the London Games. Her semifinal time, 2.09.74, was nearly six seconds slower than what she swam in London.

Rie Kaneto, of Japan, won the women’s 200-m breaststroke.

Phelps is now a perfect 4-for-4 in Olympic finals in Rio – two relay golds, two individual golds. His exit from the Olympic stage has been stunning, and singular in sports. He’s dropping gold medals in his basket like a Halloween trick or treater. “I mean, what do you do with all those medals?” says Dara Torres, a 12-time Olympic medal winner in the pool. “Ah, give them to this friend, my mom, my sisters, my son now.”

Euro 2016: Iceland beat England and ‘shock the world’ http://bdupdated.com/archives/41 http://bdupdated.com/archives/41#respond Tue, 28 Jun 2016 19:34:45 +0000 http://bdupdated.com/?p=41 Iceland’s European Championship last-16 win over England “shocked the world”, according to defender Kari Arnason. Iceland’s European Championship last-16 win over England “shocked the world”, according to defender Kari Arnason.

They will play hosts France in the quarter-final on Sunday after goals from Ragnar Sigurdsson and Kolbeinn Sigthorsson knocked out England and forced manager Roy Hodgson to resign.

Iceland, ranked 34th in the world, were surprise qualifiers for what is their first international tournament.

“We all believed. The rest of the world didn’t but we did,” said Arnason.

Iceland’s population is just 329,000 – not many more than live in Coventry and almost 10 times fewer than Wales – and it is believed 8% of those are in France following their side.

The island nation, which has no professional clubs, ranked 131st in the world during the last European Championships four years ago.

“This is without a doubt the biggest result in Icelandic football history. We’ve shocked the world,” added Arnason.

Wayne Rooney put England ahead with a fourth-minute penalty but Iceland were ahead by the 18th minute and held on comfortably despite Hodgson’s side having 18 attempts on goal.

Iceland defender Sigurdsson, 29, accused England of complacency against a side who had already held Portugal and Hungary and beaten Austria during the group stage.

“They thought this would be a walk in the park but we had faith in our ability,” Sigurdsson said.

“It went well. We didn’t feel that England created any chances. We were just heading away long balls. I wasn’t stressed in the second half.”

Euro 2016: The pundits have their say on England’s exit from the tournament

Iceland coach Heimir Hallgrimsson – joint manager with former Sweden boss Lars Lagerback – praised his side for taking their chances and is in confident mood for Sunday’s quarter-final in Paris.

“I was more relaxed than during the game against Austria,” he said.

“If someone had told me a few years ago that we would reach the last eight, I have to say I would not believe it.

“But no obstacle is too big for these guys now. If you want the best out of life you have to be ready when the opportunity comes. That is a fact and these boys were ready and this opportunity that was put in our hand was huge – it can change their lives.

“We are optimistic. Some Icelanders maybe think we are too optimistic, that we don’t think we can fail, but we have a gameplan.”

‘The fairytale continues!’

Icelandic TV commentator Gudmundur Benediktsson went viral last week with his excited reaction to the win over Austria and he was at it again during the win in Nice – even seeming to reference the result of Britain’s EU referendum.

“This is done! This is done! We are never going home! Did you see that! Did you see that!” he said.

Iceland fans
Thousands of fans gathered to watch the game in the Icelandic capital Reykjavik

“Never wake me from this amazing dream!

“Live the way you want England! Iceland is going to play France on Sunday. France-Iceland! You can go home. You can go out of Europe.

“You can go wherever the hell you want. England 1 Iceland 2 is the closing score here in Nice. And the fairytale continues.”

Lionel Messi has been urged to reconsider his international retirement by Argentina legend Diego Maradona and the country’s president.

The forward, 29, quit after missing in a penalty shootout as Argentina were beaten by Chile in the Copa America – a fourth major final loss in nine years.

“Those saying he should quit don’t want us to see what a disaster Argentinean football has become,” Maradona told La Nacion newspaper.

“Messi must go on.”

Maradona, who captained Argentina to victory in the 1986 World Cup and managed the team at the 2010 World Cup, added: “Messi has to stay because he will reach the 2018 World Cup in Russia in conditions to become world champion.

“The lads have to be supported more to help him take the team forward.”

Messi said after Sunday’s defeat that for him, the national team was “over” and that “it hurts not to be a champion”.

  • ‘Mexit’ leaves Messi fans pleading for change of heart
  • ‘I’ve done all I can’ – Messi retires from Argentina duty

According to AFP news agency, Argentine President Mauricio Macri called Messi to tell him “how proud he feels of the national team’s performance and asked him not to listen to the criticism”.

Messi has won eight La Liga titles and four Champions Leagues with his club, Spanish side Barcelona.

But his only major international honour is Olympic gold at the 2008 Games.

Defeat on Sunday was the second time in two years Argentina have lost the Copa America final to Chile on penalties, while they were beaten 1-0 by Germany in the 2014 World Cup final.

Messi, who was been awarded the Ballon d’Or five times, was also on the losing side against Brazil in the 2007 Copa America final.

Argentina are already six games into their qualification campaign for the 2018 World Cup. They are third in the table, two points behind leaders Uruguay.

The top four teams progress to the finals in Russia, while the team finishing fifth qualifies for a two-legged play-off against the best team from Oceania.

Lionel Messi’s announcement that he is retiring from international football is dominating Argentine press and social media, and there is a national push to persuade the forward to stay.

Argentina fans
Messi’s decision to retire from internationals has dominated news coverage in Argentina

The news has prompted a campaign across social media, urging the football star not to quit. Argentine President Mauricio Macri was one of millions to tweet using the hashtag #NoTeVayasLio [Don’t Go Lio], one of many hashtags to have emerged following Messi’s announcement.

Newspaper La Nacion says that the country’s focus is firmly on convincing Messi to stay, rather than any disappointment caused by the team’s defeat, in an article titled ‘Clamour for Messi eclipses frustration’.

The paper also notes the overwhelming support for Messi on social media, in contrast to the “indifference” of the Argentine Football Association.

Argentina fans
Many Argentina fans had messages for Messi as they welcomed the team back from the Copa America. The sign on the left reads: “Don’t leave me Messi, I love you more than my mum.” The sign on the right reads: “I know we don’t deserve you, but please don’t go Lio.”

Clarin newspaper is also running several features on the story. Their front page includes the results of a poll on whether Messi should stay (76% say yes), an editorial by editor Ricardo Roa entitled ‘Come back and forgive us, Leo’, and speculation as to whether other national stars will follow suit and quit.

Osvaldo Pepe, writing for Clarin online, defends Messi’s decision and says it “is not an act of cowardice, nor a dribble of confidence […] but the dignified act of a person who is emotionally broken”. Pepe adds that it does not matter if Messi retires now, for Argentina “will always be waiting” for his return.
